How to label according to German DIN standards with DIN 2403, the German Institute for Standardization defines the currently valid technology standard for labelling pipes according to their content for above ground pipes on land. In DIN 2403, the following components are defined as compulsory minimum specifications:
Specify the correct distance of observation A formula is used for calculating and deciding on a label’s size (Grafic 3) and the font height.
D = h x Z
Whereby: D = the distance of observation, h = the font height, Z = the distance factor. 300 for letters and numbers 100 for fire protection signs 40 for hazard symbols
• Group and additional colour of the content • Flow direction • Indication of the fluid content Other indicators (pressure, temperature, etc.) are optional.
Furthermore, the standard specifies how large a label should be depending on its distance of observation, and it makes several labelling recommendations that should be followed.
For us, the distance of observation is determined on two levels. Either the correct font height can be calculated from the desired distance of obser- vation on site, or, depending on the maximumdistance of observation, the correct installation location for the labelling can be determined from the potential font height at the site.
