ELECTRICAL An Electric Arc and the resulting Arc Flash is the rapid and dangerous release of energy due to an electrical arcing fault. The extreme heat creates a large amount of thermal radiant energy and produces an electrical shock. The risk occurs when working both with low and high voltage.
ELECTRIC ARC FLASH STANDARDS
IEC 61482-2 THERMAL HAZARDS OF AN ELECTRIC ARC
IEC 61482-2 protective clothing against the thermal arc hazards of an electric arc.
Individuals who work with and around low and high voltage electricity are at significant risk of various injuries. These hazards include thermal burns, hearing loss, blindness, nerve damage, cardiac arrest, shrapnel injuries from blasts, and potentially death. The dangerous nature of electrical work necessitates stringent safety measures to mitigate these severe and often life-threatening injuries.
The standard has 2 test methods, to comply with the standard either or both tests must be carried out.
OPEN ARC METHOD IEC 61482-1-1
The open arc test method is used to determine the thermal insulating properties of a fabric when exposed to the energy of an electric arc. All results are in cal/cm² the higher the value, the greater the protection. There are 3 possible values determined during this test method: · ATPV is the maximum incident energy that protective garment can be exposed to before the wearer would have a 50% probability of 2nd degree burns. · EBT is the incident energy on a material that results in a 50% probability of breakopen. · ELIM (Incident Energy Limit): This value is the highest incident thermal energy to which the garment can be exposed with a 0% risk of the wearer getting a second degree burn injury.
ASTM F2675-19
This test method determines the arc rating of a hand protective product material, or a combination of hand protective product materials. The arc thermal performance value, ATPV cal / cm2, is the penetrating energy into the gloves material that results in a 50% probability of sufficient heat transfer through the gloves to cause the onset of a second-degree skin burn.
BOX TEST METHOD IEC 61482-1-2
During the test the specimen is exposed to an electric arc, simulating typical exposure conditions for a short circuit current, confined in a box for 0.5 seconds. · For APC 1, the specimen is exposed to a current of 4 kA (400 V, 168 kJ) · For APC 2, the specimen is exposed to a current of 7 kA (400V, 320 kJ)
The ARC Grip glove is designed with a flame resistant neoprene-coated palm for excellent grip, reinforced by FR aramid liner to provide added durability and protection.

CONTINUED
Layering arc flash garments results in higher ATPV protection. The Power Of Layering When two or more electric arc flash protective garments are worn in combination, a higher level of arc flash protection is achieved. When wearing layers, a layer of air with a naturally low electrical conductivity is trapped between each garment, this helps to increase the overall insulation and protection. The total Arc Thermal Protective Value (ATPV) of layered arc flash garments cannot be worked out by adding the ATPV of each garment, because of the additional layer of air, it may be higher than the sum of the ATPV of each garment. The following page details different combinations of our garments that we have tested to demonstrate their total ATPV protection when worn together. Additional Benefits of Layering Layering provides increased comfort and it also allows for the wearer to adjust their level of protection based on the task.
Causes of an Arc Flash
A phase-to-phase or phase-to-ground fault can occur due to: · Human error · Faulty materials · Accumulation of dirt and dust When this happens, the current flows instantaneously, raising the temperature high enough to vaporise anything at the fault site.

STATIC ELECTRICITY
THE RISK An electrical charge caused by an imbalance of electrons on the surface of a material.
Invisible yet perilous, static electricity presents a major threat in production, manufacturing, industrial, and ATEX explosive environments, putting those at risk who work in these settings. The injuries it can cause range from mild discomfort to severe consequences, including burns, dangerous falls, and even cardiac arrest.
EN 1149 Electrostatic Properties
The EN 1149 standard specifies a test method for materials to be used in the production of protective clothing with electrostatic dissipation for preventing incendiary discharge. THE TEST EN 1149 - 1 Test method for measure of surface resistivity. EN 1149 - 3 Test method for measurement of charge decay. EN 1149 - 5 Material performance and design requirements. This test evaluates how effectively an electric charge passes through the glove and measures the amount of charge buildup retained in the glove material, which could be discharged upon contact with another surface. Gloves play an important role in managing static electricity since they often serve as the point of discharge when hands come into contact with different materials. The Role of Anti-Static
Selecting Garments Behind the scenes, even the layers you can’t see are hard at work. anti-static base layers, worn underneath, prevent static
from building up directly on the skin. This extra layer of defense is key in high movement environments, ensuring workers stay safe and comfortable throughout the day.
Anti-Static Coatings Anti-static coatings are applied to surfaces to prevent the accumulation of static electricity, which is especially important in environments where frequent movement and friction can generate static charges. By preventing static buildup, these coatings help reduce wear and tear on electronic components, thereby extending their lifespan and reducing maintenance costs. In manufacturing processes, particularly those involving plastics, textiles, and films, static electricity can cause contamination and defects; anti-static coatings ensure higher product quality by minimising these issues.
Anti-Static Foot Protection Anti-static footwear is designed to prevent the build-up of static electricity, reducing the risk of sparks that could lead to fire or explosion. Regulated by the European EN 20345 safety standard, anti-static footwear maintains electrical resistance between 0.1 MegaOhm and 1000 MegaOhm. It works by dissipating static charges that naturally accumulate in the body throughout the day. This type of footwear is ideal for volatile environments, such as those involving solvents or fuels. However, it is not suitable for environments with a high risk of electrical exposure due to its lower resistance to electrical currents, which could increase the risk of electrocution. Common materials like polyurethane and rubber are often used in anti-static footwear for their static dissipative properties.
8
The Role of ESD
Conductive Materials Conductive materials are designed to allow the free flow of electricity, which help neutralise static charges rapidly and prevents the accumulation of static electricity on surfaces and people. This is particularly important for the protection of sensitive electronics, as even a small ESD event in manufacturing can damage delicate components. Conductive materials ensure that any static charge is quickly dissipated before it can cause harm. Additionally, in environments dealing with flammable materials, static electricity can ignite vapours or dust, leading to explosions. Dissipative Materials Dissipative materials are designed with a specific resistance level that allows static charges to dissipate gradually rather than instantly, providing controlled discharge crucial for avoiding sudden spikes that could damage electronic circuits. By slowly dissipating static charges, dissipative materials help reduce the frequency and severity of ESD events, thereby protecting sensitive equipment and maintaining operational efficiency. Additionally, these materials are versatile and can be used in a variety of forms, including work surfaces, storage containers, and protective clothing.
Selecting Garments For enhanced flexibility and comfort, ESD jackets and trousers are the perfect choice. These garments combine protection with freedom of movement, making them perfect
for assembling intricate wiring or moving between stations. With conductive fibres seamlessly woven into the fabric, they keep static at bay while providing the comfort needed for a full day’s work.
ESD Glove Protection ESD gloves are specifically designed to prevent static buildup on a worker’s hands, which can inadvertently damage sensitive vehicle electronics such as control modules, circuit boards, and wiring systems. ESD gloves are also designed to ensure that they do not cause an electrical spark which can be potentially dangerous in explosive environments and atmospheres.

“At Alexander Battery Technologies, clothing is not just about protecting workers but also ensuring product integrity and quality. By wearing appropriate ESD-safe, contamination preventing, chemical-resistant, and heat-resistant garments, workers contribute significantly to the efficiency, safety, and success of the battery manufacturing process.” Bobby Fenwick, Trainer – Alexander Battery Technologies
ESD Foot Protection ESD footwear offers an even greater degree of electrostatic dissipation than anti-static shoes, with an electrical resistance between 0.1 MegaOhm and 100 MegaOhm. These lower levels of resistance ensure that any static build-up is discharged quickly and efficiently, thereby protecting both the wearer and preventing damage to sensitive electronic equipment. ESD footwear is regulated by the EN 61340-5-1 standard, which sets stringent requirements for protecting electronic devices from electrostatic phenomena. This type of footwear is essential in environments where even minor static charges can cause significant damage.

DRIVING SUSTAINABILITY
Legislative Spotlight: The regulation regarding CO2 emission standards for new passenger cars and vans in the European Union entered into force in April 2023. The EU aims to cut emissions from cars by 55% and from vans by 50% by 2030, compared with 2021. From 2035, this legislation states that all new cars that come on the market cannot emit any CO2. This is to ensure the transport sector can meet its target to become carbon-neutral by 2050. However, the path to a cleaner, greener future is being embraced by key industry players, driven by the need to meet the expectations of national governments and environmentally conscious consumers.
The transport sector and the automotive industry are under the spotlight regarding sustainability. The negative impacts of climate change have put sustainability, Environmental Social Governance (ESG), and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) at the forefront of decision makers’ minds. Creating a more sustainable world has never mattered more. The automotive industry produces around 80 million vehicles annually, requiring 112 million tons of materials and accounting for over 10% of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions, according to McKinsey’s analysis.
INDUSTRY CASE STUDY
The Need for a Comprehensive Recycling Route The UK’s growing reliance on electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage solutions necessitates a robust recycling framework. Presently, the country lacks the capability to refine and recycle critical materials like cobalt, nickel, lithium, and manganese from end-of-life batteries. This gap in infrastructure poses a risk to the sustainability and economic viability of the EV and energy storage industries. Establishing a complete battery material recycling route is vital to ensure the continuous supply of these valuable metals, reducing the dependency on foreign sources, and enhancing the circular economy. Cellcycle’s Innovative Recycling Technology Cellcycle’s state-of-the-art recycling process leverages advanced technologies to fully recycle used lithium-ion batteries efficiently. One of the standout innovations is the development of the Bio-based process, a method that uses biological agents to extract valuable metals from battery materials. Cellcycle is developing one of the UK’s first in-house Lithium battery recycling processes.
This environmentally friendly technique not only reduces the environmental impact of traditional recycling methods but also maximises the recovery of critical materials. While the specifics of the Bio-based process are proprietary, it represents a significant advancement in sustainable battery recycling. What are the Economic and Environmental Benefits? By establishing one of the first industrial-scale lithium-ion battery recycling plants in the UK, Cellcycle aims to create a sustainable loop of battery production and recycling. This facility will play a crucial role in managing the lifecycle of vehicle batteries, ensuring that the materials used in their production are continually recycled and reused. This not only conserves natural resources but also reduces the environmental footprint associated with mining and raw material extraction.

ANTI-FATIGUE
Automotive workers in factories often spend considerable time in static positions, engaging in repetitive actions without covering medium or long distances. Over time, this repetitive strain can result in musculoskeletal issues such as fatigue, leading to reduced productivity, reduced morale, pain, stiffness, and reduced flexibility. Prolonged foot fatigue may result in further discomfort or strain to the lower body, legs, hips, and spine. alleviate pressure and provide shock absorption An effective insole should offer arch support,
For many automotive workers, spending long hours on their feet each day is simply a part of their routine. Given over approximately 25% of the bones in our bodies are situated in our feet, they bear considerable weight and pressure daily, especially during prolonged periods of standing at work. This underscores the importance of providing adequate foot comfort and support for the wearer. The effects of foot fatigue can vary from minor annoyance to severe exhaustion. Utilising supportive insoles with dynamic features can alleviate discomfort and contribute to maintaining proper posture and alignment of joints. An effective insole should offer arch support, alleviate pressure and provide shock absorption.

ENVIRONMENTAL The automotive sector poses several respiratory hazards during the manufacturing and maintenance processes. Chemical Exposure
Why is Spraying Paint harmful to health? Many spray paints contain Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). VOCs are carbon based substances which produce harmful gases. These enter your system through inhalation or skin absorption. Isocyanate based paints are especially toxic, and breathing apparatus should be considered in such instances.
The dangers posed by hazardous substances are often underestimated, as many chemicals can become airborne and enter the body through inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact without immediate awareness. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) To mitigate these risks, the use of PPE for respiratory protection is crucial: • Disposable FFP2 or FFP3 filtering masks for sanding • Disposable overalls to prevent dust accumulation on clothing • Nitrile gloves to protect hands from dust and during wet sanding • Appropriate respiratory protection, such as a half mask, is especially important where extraction systems are insufficient Body Fillers and Associated Risks Most body fillers consist of a thermosetting unsaturated polyester in a solvent mixed with a reactive hardener. These hardeners can cause skin irritation and dermatitis, and often contain styrene and methacrylate’s, which emit strong odours. Additionally, glass fibre fillers can irritate the skin. EN 149:2001+A1:2009 Respiratory Protective Devices – Filtering Half Masks to Protect Against Particles. This European Standard covers particle filtering half masks i.e., disposable dust masks. With the A1:2009 amendment, these are now classified as either not reusable (NR) beyond a single working shift, or reusable for more than 1 shift (R).
