LAW ENFORCEMENT

We started a journey almost two decades ago. A group of hardworking people with a new technology that no one had ever seen. One that had the potential to change what workers thought of PPE. One that could change the lives of people across the world. Starting with one industry and one glove, we changed, altered, tested, and trialed until we began eliminating hand injuries for a few large companies. Eliminated – as in zero – none. That’s when we knew we were on to something. We started designing purpose-built arm, leg, and body protection, working side-by-side with our customers, creating solutions where others couldn’t – and have since defined the market for high-performance cut, puncture, needle, and impact resistance… and more. In 2016, we partnered with a German-based personal protective equipment manufacturer with over 90 years of experience to offer safety eyewear, safety helmets, and hearing protection in North America with the mission of sending every worker home safe, every day.

Our technical expertise is backed by decades of innovation, helping us to create the most advanced line of PPE in the industry.

Because in the end, we aren’t just PPE. We’re the confidence, safety, and livelihood of every worker we protect.

The cost of needlestick injuries Although there are no exact numbers on how many work related needlestick injuries occur each year across the US, estimates indicate that 600,000 to 800,000 injuries occur annually, about half of which go unreported. The Center for Disease Control estimates that more than half of those needlestick injuries occur outside of hospitals, in the field or workplace where danger is higher and immediate ramifications can be more severe Needlestick injuries: What’s the risk?

Needle exposure can cost from $5,000 $36,000 for initial evaluation to for ongoing treatment

According to the American Hospital Association, a single case of serious infection by bloodborne pathogens can add up to $1 million or more in expenses for testing, lost work time, and disability payments. Even when no infection occurs, the cost to an organization is a minimum of $5,000 for initial evaluation, up to $36,000 for ongoing treatment and time off work. Reports conducted within the last few years indicate that as high as 8% of police officers have recorded needlestick injuries while on the job. These injuries occur most commonly when officers were conducting pat-down searches, searches incident to arrest, property searches, and vehicle searches. Sticks or punctures from needles pose an elevated danger to officers due to the risk of infection from bloodborne pathogens such as hepatitis B and C, and HIV.* A 2017 report published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends “providing officers with [needle- and] cut-resistant gloves for their use when they are performing searches and pat downs,” in addition to providing nitrile gloves and/or face shields, in order to combat the dangers of accidental needlestick injuries.* In 2016 alone, nearly 64,000 Americans died from drug overdoses – equating to roughly as many American deaths in the entire Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan wars combined – and more than 122 people die every day from syringes of heroin, gel caps of fentanyl, and excess of oxycodone, according to a 2018 TIME article. This epidemic is affecting far more than users and their families. Because 60-80 percent of injection drug users have an infectious blood borne pathogen, men and women in public safety are experiencing higher risks on the job. First responders, firefighters, public safety officials, and correctional officers are exposed to more needlestick threat than ever before.**

Safety technologies and testing: Puncture resistance

The ANSI/ISEA 105 test In February of 2016, the ANSI/ISEA 105 standard was updated and published to include two puncture standards: Puncture Resistance (other than hypodermic needle) and Hypodermic Needlestick Puncture. Prior to 2015, there was only one puncture test, which did not specify the type of puncture hazard that the standard was created for, leaving it open to interpretation. Having both an industrial puncture standard and a hypodermic needle puncture standard allows safety officials to differentiate between what protection they need most, based on more relevant testing and classification.

ANSI/ISEA 105 Industrial Puncture Resistance

ASTM F2878 Hypodermic Needlestick Puncture Resistance

EN388: Industrial puncture resistance (non-hypodermic needlestick puncture) The EN388 probe is the approved puncture test for ANSI/ISEA 105 and measures the amount of force needed for a blunt probe to pierce through the sample material (taken from palm).

• The blunt probe moves at a 90˚ angle at a speed of 100mm/minute • Results are reported in Newtons and are given a 1-5 classification rating, with 1 being low resistance and 5 being high resistance • The test is done 4 times for every palm sample • The lowest score is reported

ASTM F2878: Hypodermic needlestick puncture resistance The ASTM F2878 is the approved puncture test for ANSI/ISEA 105 and measures the amount of force needed for a 25-gauge hypodermic needle to pierce through the sample material.

• The puncture probe (25-gauge needle) travels at a 90˚ angle into the specimen at a speed of 500 millimeters per minute • Results are reported in Newtons and are given 1-5 classification rating, with 1 being low resistance and 5 being high resistance • The test is done 12 times for every palm sample • The average of the 12 results is reported

Our needlestick-resistant gloves and arm guards are thoroughly lab tested using actual 25-gauge needles to give you maximum protection and peace of mind.

Advanced needlestick technology HexArmor ® sets the industry standard for needle protection by providing needlestick solutions that layer SuperFabric ® * brand material inside the gloves (exclusively licensed to HexArmor ® in the industrial PPE market) . SuperFabric ® is available in a variety of base fabrics with guard plates applied to arrest, deflect and stop punctures from reaching the skin’s surface. When a needle meets a SuperFabric ® guard plate, the material blocks and deflects the hazard. Needlestick testing The international standard ASTM F2878 addresses the unique mechanics of hypodermic needle punctures related to PPE and is performed using a 25-gauge needle. Standardized safety tests like the ASTM F2878 have made the selection process easier for safety managers seeking out application-specific PPE. HexArmor ® Pointguard ® products utilize 2 or 3 layers of SuperFabric ® protection to deliver needle resistance levels of 4 or 5, the highest rating possible. Cut testing Unlike typical fiber-based needlestick gloves, HexArmor ® with SuperFabric ® is designed to prevent hazards from puncturing through and ultimately penetrating the skin’s surface. Most of our SuperFabric ® PPE maintains industry-leading A6 to A9 rated cut levels. Purpose-built protection, beyond “slash” resistance While leather general-duty gloves have long been the standard in law enforcement, HexArmor’s specialized Pointguard ® needlestick products offer extreme protection when the situation arises. Needle resistance is different from industrial puncture and different from most cut-resistant technology you’re used to. Pointguard products are far advanced from standard leather, nitrile, or knit gloves.

Wearability ® : The key to compliance

HexArmor ® safety eyewear was developed as a natural extension of our core mission: to send every worker home safe, every day. To accomplish this, we knew the safety eyewear we designed and manufactured needed to be a product workers would want to wear – PPE that wouldn’t get in the way – because we all know the safest PPE is the PPE that’s worn. The best way to ensure that eyewear is being worn? Create a product centered on Wearability ® – which is the key to compliance. At HexArmor, ® safety eyewear Wearability ® is comprised of three main factors: Lens technology The part of eyewear that gets little attention (but can have a significant impact) is the lenses. Proprietary LTX ® Lens Technology by HexArmor ® provides uncompromised optical clarity. This, combined with maximum impact resistance, makes our HexArmor lenses top class. Coatings technology Not all lens coatings are the same. Typical dip coatings don’t allow the flexibility of anti-fog and scratch resistance to be applied on different sides of the lens. The flow-coating technique used by HexArmor ® allows this flexibility and outlasts all other eyewear on the market. Fit architecture We take fit very seriously. Properly-fitting eyewear gives wearers confidence. It protects from dust and debris, is free of pressure points, is lightweight, and doesn’t slip. The right eyewear looks and feels good and is easily compatible with other PPE.

Proper protection with no side effects, this is Wearability. ® The result? Compliance.

Hydrophilic vs. Hydrophobic TruShield ® anti-fog coating technology

Hydrophobic vs. hydrophilic lens performance Our fundamentally different TruShield ® coatings outperform anything on the market due to HexArmor’s chemically engineered anti-fog technology that absorbs moisture droplets as they hit the lens, eliminating fog. This moisture absorbing process is known as hydrophilic and is found in all HexArmor’s anti-fog coatings. What’s more, we apply each coating four times thicker than the competition, making the hydrophilic anti-fog properties even more robust, higher-absorbing, and better performing. This is vastly different than competitive eyewear who use hydrophobic technology to eliminate fog, which causes moisture to spread as it hits the lens. Although effective for a short period, hydrophobic anti-fog coatings are detergent based and wash off over time. This type of short-term fog protection leads to compliance issues and eyewear being treated as disposable. Unmatched cleanability HexArmor's truly permanent anti-fog coatings have proven themselves again and again — staying true to their nature after countless cleanings, leading them to outperform and outlast even the toughest competitors — surpassing the ANSI/ ISEA anti-fog standard for the lifetime of the eyewear. That’s because HexArmor ® uses nanotechnology to bond coatings and create the smoothest surface possible for the best possible cleaning.

With hydrophilic coatings, moisture is absorbed into the coating, eliminating fog.

With hydrophobic coatings, moisture spreads across the lens, eliminating fog.

Exclusive flow-coating application Profoundly different from the traditional dip-coating methods used by other safety eyewear brands, each TruShield ® coating is applied to the lens one-side-at-a-time with HexArmor’s signature flow-coating technology. Flow-coating allows each side of the lens to be coated with either a permanent anti-fog, a scratch-resistant hard coat, or a combination of both to give wearers specific protection where they need it the most. This specialized dual-coating process is exclusive to HexArmor ® , allowing fog- and scratch-resistance to be amplified individually to extreme levels or combined when needed, delivering safety defense where it’s needed most. By comparison, dip-coating applies the same coating to both sides of the lens and can sacrifice the quality of one protective property over the other.

The importance of a glove trial

A glove trial is the process of field-testing different models of safety gloves, either from a single source or several manufacturers, in order to identify the best glove for a particular job. When done correctly, the benefits of a glove trial include: • I mproved hand safety program and equipment and reduced rate of hand injuries • I ncreased awareness of hand safety issues among workers • H igher rates of compliance with hand safety PPE requirements • R eduction in costs related to hand protection, through increased efficiency and durability of work gloves, or reduced insurance rates, medical costs, and workers’ comp claims Work conditions vary from one job to another. There is no way to tell how effective a particular safety glove will be without testing it in the field to see how it holds up and protects against the actual hazards encountered in the workplace. Although a glove may have tested well in laboratory settings and been granted a high cut rating, it may lack abrasion resistance and break down quickly in the field. If a glove doesn’t offer the same level of protection at the end of the work day as it does at the beginning, then you need to consider another option. To ensure you avoid wasting time and energy on a poorly-run glove trial, we have outlined a set of proven steps you can take in the glove trial process. These tips and recommendations come from over a decade of experience working with large industrial companies.

Glove care - why does it matter? Improper glove care can shorten the life of your PPE

It can also lead to dermatitis, decreased dexterity, loss of protective abilities, and odor. Glove care refers not only to laundering but also proper storage, routine glove checks, and knowledge of materials and their particular strengths and weaknesses. Because there are so many different work gloves on the market, experienced safety managers should be aware of what workers’ gloves are made of and how they will stand up to the applications they’re being used for. Common glove materials include nylon, spandex, leather, cotton, SuperFabric ® *, Kevlar ® , and knit fibers. Each of these materials has a certain way it needs to be cared for. Often there is a blending of the materials, making proper care even more crucial. Proper storage Gloves should be stored in clean, dry conditions, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Routine glove checks Glove life varies depending on the application, environment, and amount of use. It is vital that you perform routine glove checks before beginning work every day. Take note of areas that have begun to wear down, such as a loose hook and loop closure or a worn-down name tag. If you see holes in the synthetic leather or TP-X ® material on the palm of your glove, this is an indication that its protective qualities may be compromised, putting you at risk of injury. Lingering moisture or a strong odor are also signs that your gloves may need to be replaced. Keeping an eye out for these issues (and others) takes you one step further from a worksite hand injury, which is the ultimate goal of hand protection.

Cleaning + care Most gloves and arm and body PPE are machine washable. Please see hexarmor.com for product specific washing instructions. Increase your glove lifespan Laundering removes harmful chemicals, perspiration, and everyday grit and grime that can weaken protective fibers and seams.
